Solar Curriculum Training for Teachers

  • Climate Change Unit: The Energy of Innovation (Grade 5)

  • Tracing Energy's Pathway to the Sun and Back (Grades 6-8)

These curricula center the learning around the student, connecting their own lives and communities to larger concepts such as cellular respiration, the carbon cycle, carbon sequestration, solar energy, and much much more. Experiential, hands-on learning is essential, and the lessons use a variety of teaching methods, from individual and group work to multimedia and expository writing to experimental design and real-world applications. The curricula focus primarily on science but also incorporate math, social science, and language arts. Students will be introduced to possible career paths in the clean energy industry, creating a powerful seed bank of ideas and questions as they look ahead to high school.

The curricula are aligned with current standards, including PA's new STEELS standards, Next Generation Science Standards, and Eco Schools.

PSEA will provide a $50 stipend for all workshop participants, along with breakfast, lunch, and all materials for teachers who complete the one-day training. Participants will also have the opportunity to sign up for a follow-up consultation (an additional $50 stipend) and to submit feedback on the lessons they've implemented (an additional $100 stipend).

When:  Saturday, October 14th,  9:30 - 3:30 p.m.

Where:  Friends Center, MLK Room, 3rd floor,  1515 Cherry Street, Philadelphia, PA.
